The process of planting onions:

Step 1

Cut off the stem. Cut them at least an inch above the root. If you want to basically cut out the green parts, you can cut them higher. The underlying root system is what you need.

If you plan to use fertilizer, don't use non organic fertilizer, because it will dry up the rich materials in the soil and wither the onions after a season. You can spread organic fertilizer in your fields or pots, or just use simple things, such as raw vegetable scraps, banana peels or eggshells. Used coffee grounds are also a good technique. If you happen to have a pet rabbit, you can use its excrement.

You can harvest leaves at any time during the harvest season, although many people recommend waiting until the leaves are at least 8 inches long. Harvest when the leaves are green and long enough to eat. Be sure to cut the leaves, not the white stems, to maintain a continuous growth cycle.
