Choosing Between Hand Pruners and Loppers

Nov 17, 2022

Pruning can be hard work, but you can use the right tools to make this garden working become easier and faster. Not only will the right tools save you time and effort, but they can also help ensure that your plants remain healthy and strong, free from any damage that may be caused by improper pruning. Using the wrong tool can cause damage to the tool and the plant. Two commonly used gardening tools are pruners and loppers. So how do you know which one to use?

First, the width of the branch you plan to trim will determine whether you should use a hand pruner or a lopper. A hand pruner is a one-handed tool used to trim branches and stems that are half an inch or less in width. While loppers, on the other hand, are two-handed pruning tools with long handles and solid blades that are used to trim medium-sized, thick branches and stems that can't be cut with a regular hand pruner, which is smaller than 1-1.5 inches but still too large for hand pruning. For larger branches/stems use a pruning saw.

Second, functionally, the main purpose of hand pruners is to remove dead, diseased, or damaged stems and branches from plants and shrubs. It is important to remove dead parts of plants, as dead stems tend to attract unwanted insects and diseases. Pruning will also help improve plant health and prevent unwanted growth. The lopper, on the other hand, trims overgrown plants, thinning thick leaves, wilting flowers, and cutting soft and hard stems. Long handles allow you to cut accurately at higher heights and in tight Spaces. Unlike hand-held pruners, pruners can cut branches at least as thick as a pencil. Higher up in the tree, thicker branches are easier to cut with a knife because you have more levers and longer tentacles.
